Working with Charlie Braham on Just Desserts was one of the best decisions I made during post production. Charlie handled all of our post sound, including dialogue editing and processing, Foley, sound effects, worldizing, ADR coordination, music integration, and the final 5.1 theatrical and stereo mixes. He took the music I selected for the film and seamlessly incorporated it into the overall soundscape so everything felt natural, polished, and professional. He also brought an incredible level of honesty and experience to the process. When he felt that trying to repair certain production audio would sound worse than recording clean ADR, he wasn't afraid to tell me. That kind of guidance was invaluable. Throughout the project, he offered ideas, listened to my direction, and always kept my vision for the film at the center of the process.
One of the things that impressed me most was Charlie's communication. Because he lives in another country, I was initially a little apprehensive about how communication would work, especially when dealing with technical issues and revisions. Those concerns disappeared almost immediately after we had an early Zoom meeting. Charlie was incredibly patient and respectful with me as a newer feature filmmaker. He never made me feel stupid for asking questions or inadequate for not knowing something, and he always took my concerns seriously. We worked together for more than a month, and he made what could have been a stressful part of filmmaking feel incredibly easy. He was also extremely reliable with his schedule and was often delivering work a day or two ahead of what we had planned. Even when I chose not to go with some of his creative suggestions, he never took it personally. He understood that it was my film while still pushing me when he believed something could be better.
Beyond the quality of his work, Charlie became much more than just a sound designer on this project. His attitude, candor, professionalism, and genuine investment in Just Desserts made him feel more like a friend of the project than a business partner. He even went the extra mile by traveling to the United States to attend our premiere with the cast and crew, which says a lot about how much he cares about the projects he works on. I truly believe Charlie provided an incredible level of value at a very reasonable price, and I couldn't be happier with the sound of the finished film. There is no question that Charlie will be my first call when I begin my next feature. "Charlie lifted the feature-length film “The Human Supremacist” to new heights with his contribution as the sound editor/re-recording mixer. As the director, I worked with him directly and he went beyond what was asked of him. Charlie encountered and overcame all sorts of audio situations such as: low dialogue volume, ADR, pops/clicks, removing unwanted noise from persistent insects and planes among other sources, technical problems with the AAF, etc. There were several spots where he would be as surgical as replacing a letter in the dialogue to improve it. Additionally, he assisted with the sound design in a film that often
took an impressionistic approach to sound. The sound mixing had a unique technique as well because there were sequences where a straightforward decision wouldn’t be the best one. The audio work also took into consideration how it would sound in theatres versus televisions, computers, cell phones and with headphones on. “The Human Supremacist” required considerable work, especially to the dialogue, to have it ready for festivals/distribution and it very much leans on the sound for its most creative humor. Charlie outputted a stereo and 5.1 mix along with other necessary files. He did this all remotely with timeliness, work ethic and strong communication so the distance and time difference wasn’t an issue. I highly recommend Charlie and I would collaborate with him again."
